18th Century Mantel Clock by Armingaud L'aine a Paris SOLD

A late 18th Century marble mantel clock by Armingaud L’ainé (The Elder). The Large early French movement with silk suspension strikes on a bell, dating from no later that 1800. This is a rare survivor of the golden age of French clock making.

The superb white enamel dial is unblemished with a roman chapter ring.

The beautifully figured marble case is of restrained design and sets off the chased and engraved ormolu bezel and arrow hands on the dial.

Armingaud the Elder is listed in Tardy’s La Pendule Francaise, examples of his clocks can be found in the national collection of France and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
