An Unusual Half-Hour Sonnerie Striking, Quarter Repeating Carriage Clock with Alarm

£3,250.00

A gilt brass carriage clock in Corniche case with white enamel dial and blued steel hands. The movement is unusual, in that it repeats the full quarters and hours on demand as a grand sonnerie would. But strikes the hours at the hour, and the hours and quarters at the half hour during normal running. During servicing we found no filled holes or pins missing, so this clock must have always been set up this way and sold as this. Interestingly Leigh Extence in his 2013 ‘Jacot Catalogue’ describes two examples of half-hour sonnerie striking that he has identified as peculiar to Henri Jacot.

This " style of strike” would appear peculiar to Jacot, in which there is grande-sonnerie strike, but only on the half-hour rather than all the quarters, as is normal, although a few other examples by other makers have since been examined. This allowed for an extra complication without the need for the larger barrel required for the extra strike on a grande-sonnerie.”

Leigh Extence ‘Jacot Catalogue’ 2013 p31

The two train alarm movement striking on two coiled blued steel gongs with two hammers. The going barrel retaining its original stop work, so it can not be overwound and will run on the middle part of the spring for best timekeeping. The ‘English lever’ platform is silvered and of good quality.

This clock comes with our two year guarantee.

14.5cm H (with handle) x 8cm W x 7cm D
