RAF Officers Mess Clock

£1,300.00
Sold Out

A rare pre WW2 mantel timepiece made for the Royal Air Force by FW Elliott in 1938 and numbered 4645 on the back plate. The single fusee eight day movement is housed in a solid oak case of restrained utilitarian design. The silvered roman dial is in perfect condition with the engraved cypher of the RAF clearly visible surrounded by a laurel wreath under the crown of George VI. The dial is behind convex glass with a brass bezel unlocked by a brass side push button.

The pedimented case is typical of these Officers’ Mess or Sergeants’ Mess Clocks made for use on RAF bases, they would not have been restricted to dining halls but would have been in most rooms as extremely reliable timekeepers. The movement and case have both been marked with the number 5 which may well be some form of catalogue number for the airbase this clock was used at. The case is in excellent condition and has developed a slightly sun bleached colour.

Having been made in 1938 this clock would have been witness to extraordinary events during the Battle of Britain in WW2.

The clock is shown unserviced and will come with our two year guarantee once sold.

36cm H x 23.5cm W x 14cm D
