Marine Chronometer By Wempe

£2,350.00

A Chronometerwerke Hamburg type 5 two day marine chronometer by Wempe numbered 5077. The free-sprung spotted movement with blued steel helical hairspring to a cut and compensated bimetallic balance and jewelled lever escapement. The going barrel with maintaining power, and the signed four inch arabic dial with a 56 hour counter over a subsidiary seconds dial, in a gimbaled numbered bowl and oak box.

Wempe was founded in 1878 by Gerhard Diedrich Wempe, and is one of the worlds most prestigious jewellers and watchmakers. In 1938 Wempe bought the Hamburger Chronometerwerke GmbH from shipbuilders based in Hamburg and Bremen. This company, which had been founded in 1905, produced highly precise marine chronometers under the management of the renowned chronometer maker Ferdinand Denker. Through this purchase, Wempe lays the foundations of the company’s own internationally competitive chronometer workshop, which also serves as a training facility for talented watchmakers.

This Chronometer was made in the Wempe Chronometerwerke Workshop to their exacting standards and is a lovely example of a mid century working marine chronometer, having last been used on a Greek boat the ‘Delicat’ as recorded in the label inside the case.
