Precision Travelling Barometer By James Murray

An extremely high quality compensated barometer, in a patinated bronze case with with a frosted silver dial housing a thermometer inset within the recess. The extremely fine hand cut blued steel indicator hand, is less than a millimetre thick and demonstrates the skill and craftsmanship of the maker. The setting needle is set into the bezel which is knurled and rotates around the dial.

James Murray came from a family of clockmakers, and became one of the finest clockmakers and retailers in England and India. Selling top quality clocks, chronometers and barometers. Murray remained one of the most coveted names in master-crafted timepieces in British India. Desired by Maharajas, industrialists, politicians and many popular personalities. James Weddell took three chronometers and a barometer made by the Murray firm on his Antarctic Expedition in 1822 - 1824. Examples of his work can be found in the collection of British Museum.
